Both riders have lost nothing in ability.
For two years Rossi has had to over-ride the Yamaha and that often ended in disaster as the bike was not on the pace of the Ducati in 07 and had other issues in 06 - engine wise and tyre performance wise.
Stoner on the other hand had a fantastic machine and tyre combination and with him on board was a mighty strong package.
In 06 Hayden was the luckiest man in the paddock to be gifted a World Championship with only 2 wins! Stoner in 07 was far more worthy with a brilliant domination.
Rossi and Lorezo with Yamaha, Michelin and Bridgestone have worked extremely hard to bridge the performance gap. That is now evidenced by the recent results.
In 08 Ducati have made some changes to their machine, but cannot find the magic combination that seemed so easy in 07, partly because the other teams have made big progress engine wise and Michelin have lifted their game especially after Rossi defected to Bridgestone. You only need to see Marco Melandris results to see that there are some major problems dogging Ducati and a rider of Melandri's ability should not be where he is. They will sort it out. Honda on the other hand have made some good progress with Michelin, but their engine performanc eis still behind until they can fully develop the pneumatic valve engine.
You will see some great battles coming up and now that Rossi is brimming with confidence, the rivals will be very wary...
