Post coil information? Reply with quote
ok on another post coils have been brought up, this is a few question to darren and john;

some coils have been wound differently? here are some different types of coils below, a lot of riders have no idea on their coil and the performance gains to be had, as there is no information regarding this, so can you give everyone more information.

what is the differance with the spark output?
what is the maximum rpm output for these coils?
which ones have had timing changes wound into them? i'm thinking the victory has a stage, but unsure?
what is the difference to a 3 iron to a 2 iron coil and benifits to be had?

a standard coil?

3 irons coil?

high voltage coil?

ducati coil?

victory ignition coil?

grc coil?

polini coil?

and i have a red 3 irons coil on my bike but dont know the make, some info on that would be nice too if you know what it is.

thanks

If you can provide part numbers then maybe I can endevour to explain the differences. There are only two coil manufacturers.
I do know for a fact that some of the BZM coils specified for Blata reps do not work because of the early model copy flywheels.
You can be sure that the BZM (Selletra) and Polini (Ducati) have electronic triggers. As for the china coils, I dont know for sure. In regards to the high voltage output, it totally depends on the secondary coil winding. Typically you could expect a turns ratio of about 100:1 in order raise the voltage required to spark up around 5000V and by the magneto principle, the voltage will increase with higher revs as the intensity of the collapsing magnetic field is increased by rapid fall time by the use of an electronic trigger (as opposed to contact points).
You can use a strobe light and a degree wheel to check the spark advance of your coil as Glen has done (but don't try and video capture it!)

i dont know the part numbers but elaborate on the BZM (Selletra) and Polini (Ducati) as they are 2 you deal with,

what is the differance with the spark output? The voltage required should be large enough to jump the spark plug air gap inside a high-compression/high temperature combustion chamber space. The higher the combustion pressure/heat the larger the voltage required.
what is the maximum rpm output for these coils?Maximum rpm is not an output of the coil. The coil is made to produce a high voltage pulse (the spark which jumps the spark plug air gap) depending on the timing trigger. In this case the trigger is the flywheel magnet and the coil has some eletronic components inside to turn the primary winding circuit on and off. The collapsing magnetic field of the primary winding induces electricity to flow in the secondary coil which has many more windings and thus produces a higher output voltage. The (non-variable) coil is designed to operate best at a peak rpm. The trigger is aligned to a point somewhere around TDC. So, adjusting your flywheel timing key can be detrimental if you have no idea why/what you are doing. Best to leave the timing as is and not assume that the engine manufacturer did not know what they were doing when they set the timing. This applies to Polini and BZM and Blata original and copy only. For cags, well some gains can be had, since this engine is based on a weed wacker designed to operate at a fixed rpm.
which ones have had timing changes wound into them? i'm thinking the victory has a stage, but unsure?I dont know about the Victory coil and I dont think that any of the Selletra or Ducati coils have multiple 'stages'
what is the difference to a 3 iron to a 2 iron coil and benifits to be had?The 3 iron coil has an advantage in that it 'forces' the the small voltage to be induced into the primary winding by reversing the magnetic field (as the second leg passes over the N pole) instead of just relying on the collapsing magnetic field developed after the magnets have passed the 2 irons type. This results in a more accurate 'trigger' at high rpms. All magnetos rely on the magnetic poles of the flywheel being aligned with the armatures and is a reason why some coils and flywheels dont work properly or at all.

a standard coil? china made

3 irons coil?Made by Selletra

high voltage coil?Maybe you mean a CDI system?

ducati coil?Made by Ducati Energie

victory ignition coil?Don''t know

grc coil?As supplied by BZM or Polini

polini coil?Made by Ducati Energie

and i have a red 3 irons coil on my bike but dont know the make, some info on that would be nice too if you know what it is.Probably a Selettra

thanks

is a good read about ignitions and coils. Be sure to read Parts 1 & 2.
