Post bzm clutch setting Reply with quote
hey i mashed a set of standard bzm shoes the other week so i just put the new carbonium shoes on tonight -

i ready they should be set to 25mm from the top of the plate to the washer were the spring is (shown in the link) but when i set them at that the nuts where nearly hanging off the clutch and the bike would take off instantly. Confused

so now they are set to maybe 19-20mm and seem to be alright. what distance are people running on the bzm clutches??

its an 80mm bell with a 2 shoe 80mm bzm clutch as well.

i had bzm ones and i think the nut was in line with the plastic block but with but with bzm springs and zocchie zhoes the nut is way down and engages about the same.

I think the mesurements told are a starting point, the top of my nut is inline with the end of the thread on my clutch. u can also put washers inbetween the backing plate & shoe to space it out. this is what i have done Wink

what clutches are most of you elite guys running? wondering whether to keep the 2 shoe or trade it for a zocchi 3 shoe..

i seem to be going through the 2 shoe clutches like toilet paper even though my bell is fine and the rpm seems to be set right with a go kart tach. can the 2 shoes handle a bzm 6 port?

cheers

hey Glen, i run a BZM 2 shoe clutch on my BZM 6P 50cc. i use the Carbon pads. i have done 2 race meets plus a few hours on practice nights on the 50cc plus maby 5 hours wit the 40cc and its only showing minimal wear so far.
i used to go through pads very quick when i couldnt set it properly , i used to over do the 2 nuts and compress the spings just that little bit to much i think and the clutch would fell like it was engaging good but it wasnt, realy it was slipping and i was burning up my clutches.
also i noticed that constant on off throtlling wore out my clutches very fast, ie: once you have the throtle on and clutch is engaged try and keep it engaged.
with the right set up Carbon pads on a 2 shoe BZM clutch WILL last u along time.

if your setting it with out a RPM taco like i do, dont try and hit that "sweet spot" straight away because if u go to far and put to much load on the springs the pads will open to late and they will slip and burn up.
i find this works for me give each nut a few turns so the springs cant move around and are a little compreesed measure make sure u have them even. put bell and chain on check rev the bike on the stand and see when the wheel starts to spin. No doubt it will be engaging too early but i use this as my starting piont from here it just a matter of giving it even turns on each nut, say 1 full turn in tighter then test ride it untill i feel i have the 'Sweet spot' im looking for. Once you fell its about right tats when i use 1/4 turns and fine tune it. its the long way but this way i know i wont over do it and burn it up.

question, my clutch shoes have worn down so much that now to get them to engage proper the springs are now loose and the shoes have a fair bit of side play in them.

whats the best way to fix it? use a smaller clutch bell or shove some washers between the shoe and backplate to keep the spring tight? trying to get out of it a little cheap.. dont really have the $$ to be changing clutch shoes at the moment Sad

use a washer and a smaller bell if u have too. keep the gap between the bell and pads around 1mm-1.7mm

If you have a smaller bell that is one option but washers under the pads works well also!
Depends if you have a 79mm bell i guess!

I have the BZM carbonium 3 shoe clutch/red springs and run my spring tension at 15-16mm and have done so for a while and theres minimum wear on the pads Razz
9 - 10K launches = fun Twisted Evil
Like the others have said the little washers under the pad are an effective way closing the gap,did it with my old clutch Wink
